Enjoy a Great Summer with Healthy Teeth!

We may be getting a lot of rain lately in southern Missouri, but as we all know... April Showers Bring May Flowers! Soon warm weather will be here to stay and everyone will be out enjoying the best that spring and summer has to offer. Access Dental and Dentures loves this time of year, but we also know it can be a hard time to remember healthy dental habits and protect your teeth in the way they should be. Today's blog is talking about how to protect your teeth and keep them shining and happy through the warm season. Keep reading to learn more!

Don't Forget Self Care

In the fall and winter time, it's natural for us to turn to things that make us feel cozy, happy, and well cared for. When the weather is cold and bleak, we know we need to take really good care of ourselves to boost our immune systems and stay in high spirits. In the spring and summer, it can actually be easy to get so wrapped up in spending time outside and enjoying the cheery weather that we forget we still need to take good care of ourselves.

Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily are important habits to keep all summer-long, even if you're tired from a long day boating on the water or spending a lot of time outside. It's also critically important that you drink enough water during the warmer months. Water is always important and helps flush away food particles and exposure your teeth to additional fluoride. But it's even more important in the summer when the hot weather and extra activity is causing you to sweat. Stay hydrated with at least half your weight in ounces of water every day (i.e. if you weigh 140 pounds, you should drink at least 70 ounces of water a day).

Balanced Diet

Summer is an easy time to let your diet go. After all, who can constantly say no to friendly barbecues with lots of chips and dip, popsicles, ice cream, a refreshing lemonade, cold beer, and more? There's nothing wrong with enjoying these kinds of foods and beverages in moderation. However, make sure you are still getting all the vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients that your body needs on a daily basis! If you do like to indulge once in awhile, make sure to rinse your mouth out with water afterward, or brush your teeth if you can. This will prevent the additional sugars from sticking to your teeth for too long and promoting bacterial growth.

Protect Your Teeth AND Have Fun

Taking a few important safety precautions doesn't mean you can't have any fun. There are just a few simple steps you can take to protect your teeth during this summer's fun activities...
  • Wear a helmet... when biking, skate boarding, or roller blading.

  • Use a mouthpiece... when playing full contact sports like football.

  • Know where you dive... diving in the shallow end of a pool or in an unknown area of a river or lake could spell disaster for your teeth (and more!) if you hit the bottom or a rock.

  • Eliminate tripping hazards... in your lawn, on your dock, around the pool - wherever you spend a lot of time, make sure there aren't any tripping hazards that could cause someone to fall and break a tooth.

Keep Teeth Healthy & Happy This Summer!

Summer is a great season full of sunshine and fun outdoor activities with the kiddos. Summer activities can also come with a few more natural risks for kids' teeth than usual. Access Dental and Dentures is the best dentist in southern Missouri, and we are here to help you prepare for a fun season that is also safe so you don't end up with a dental emergency this summer. Keep reading to learn more!

Healthy Habits

Summertime is a season of fun and play! Kids are excited to be done with school, and everyone is ready to have summer barbecues and sunny summer days with friends and family. Sometimes this can mean that our regular routine gets disrupted. Dental health shouldn't get neglected. Make sure you and the kids are still brushing your teeth twice a day and regularly flossing to keep your gums, teeth, and mouth happy all summer!

It's also important to make sure you are still following a balanced diet through the summer. Hot dogs from the grill, s'mores over the fire, ice cream cones... They are all part of a nostalgic, fun summer! Just make sure to limit these items or at least brush your teeth and/or rinse your mouth with water afterward. This can help prevent sugar from sticking to your teeth and feeding bacteria that could cause cavities and sensitivity.

Summer Activities

Days at the pool, riding bikes, and playing sports are all fun parts of the summer season as well. Each of these activities can bring risk into the picture for your kid's teeth. While at the pool, make sure they understand it is important to not run. You never know when there may be a slippery patch of ground that could cause them to fall and break their teeth on the concrete. When riding a bike, it's important to wear a helmet to help protect your head. Some sports are more aggressive than others and can cause serious impact to your teeth. If you are playing a full contact sport, it's a good idea to wear a mouth guard while you're participating.

Oral Care Tips for Summer

Summer is almost here! With the kids out of school and their schedules out of the ordinary, oral care may start to slip. Get a grip on your entire families' dental care routines and keep those smiles on track, during the summer months. Your trusted dentist in southern Missouri is here for all of your dental needs. From a routine check up to an emergency dental repair, we service all the dental needs for your entire family! Take a look at how you can help keep your family on track this summer, when it comes to oral health.

Schedule a Check Up

With a number of students out of school this summer, it's a great time to schedule your child's dental check up. This is a convenient way to knock out a visit to the dentist without having to miss any school! A dental visit should be performed at least once every six months - why not get that accomplished while the kids are free this summer? It can be helpful to schedule your dental appointment for the same time, that way you don't have to make two trips to visit us!

Think Healthy Foods

With the youngsters out of school, it can be tempting to keep junk food around for easy to eat and tasty treats. These types of foods are usually loaded with unnecessary sugars and processed foods. The added sugar can build up on your child's teeth, causing bacteria to attack the tooth. This can often lead to tooth decay. Try to substitute sugar-filled snacks for healthy fruits and vegetables!

Monitor Oral Care Routines

With later nights and routines a little different than the school year, it's important that your kids are still brushing their teeth twice each day. After playing outside all day, they may crash during the evenings - make sure they brush their teeth before heading to bed. It's also important that everyone in your family floss between their teeth once each day! This can help remove any built up bacteria and food particles that get trapped between the teeth.

Avoid Dental Emergencies

With the increase in outdoor activities, the chance of a dental injury does go up. There are some preventative methods that can be taken to help avoid such emergency. Make sure your child wears a mouth guard when playing contact sports, especially in the summer months. Another frequent dental emergency is caused by falling at the pool. Remind your little ones to follow any rules at your local pool - no running and diving in the shallow end, in particular.

You're ready to take on this summer with happy and health smiles all around! Now that you've learned some of the easy ways to keep up with the entire families' oral care routine, you can help promote health oral care. We look forward to serving your family this summer, for all of your oral care needs in southern Missouri. Our dental office offers a number of locations, making it convenient for all dental customers! Access Dental & Dentures wants to help make your families' summer a great one!
