New Dental Goals for 2018

The New Year always brings a time of reflection over the year before, and anticipation for the year that's coming. With that comes resolutions, goals, and plans for the New Year! If you have struggled with dental issues in the past, maybe 2018 is the time to take hold of them and let your dentist in Central Missouri help you reach your goa.s. From repairing cavities to crowns and bridgework, and even dentures, we can help you have the smile you've always dreamt of. Here are a few ways we can help you achieve all of your new dental goals for 2018

Veneers

Porcelain veneers are dental prosthetics that are placed on the surface of discolored, chipped, cracked, or misaligned teeth and are probably the most esthetic means of creating a more pleasing smile. They require a minimal amount of tooth reduction (approximately .5 mm) and are, therefore, a more conservative restoration than a crown. Though veneers are simple to place and delicate in appearance, the role a thin ceramic shell can have in producing a beautiful smile is quite remarkable. Dental veneers allow us to alter tooth position, shape, size and color. They are not the only alternative for all esthetic abnormalities but are truly a remarkable restoration when they are the treatment of choice.

Teeth Whitening

We will provide you a custom whitening tray, made from your own dental impressions. Once at home, you can choose how often and long to use the supplied whitening agent to customize the brightness of your smile. This can be a great way to improve an already great smile!

Dental Implants

Are you self-conscious about a tooth that is missing? Dental Implants are basically sophisticated screws made of a medically pure metal, Titanium. These screws are then placed in the jaw bone and rest under the gum for 3 - 6 months. During this time they actually fuse to the jawbone and become osseo (bone) integrated. After the appropriate healing time, we uncover the implants and use them to replace one or more missing teeth by fabricating some sort of dental prosthesis.

Crowns

The reasons your dentist may suggest restoring your tooth with a crown can vary from case to case. Some of the indications for a using a crown are:
  • A previously filled tooth where there now exists more filling than tooth. The existing tooth structure becomes weakened and can no longer support the filling.
  • Extensive damage by decay.
  • Discolorations and compromised esthetics.
  • Fractures
  • Root canal - After root canal, teeth tend to become brittle and are more apt to fracture. They, therefore, need to be protected by a crown.
  • Bridges - When missing teeth are replaced with a bridge, the adjacent teeth require crowns in order to support the replacement teeth.
Crowns strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and can improve the appearance of your teeth. Crowns can be made from different materials which include the full porcelain crown, the porcelain-fused-to-metal crown and the all-metal crown. You and your dentist will decide which type is appropriate, depending upon the strength requirements and esthetic concerns of the tooth involved.

Fitting a crown requires at least two appointments. During your first visit, the tooth is prepared for the crown, an impression or mold is made of the tooth, and a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth. At the subsequent visit, the temporary crown is removed and the final crown is fitted and adjusted and cemented into place.

Dentures/Partials

For missing teeth, we can make dentures or removable partials for you right in our own on-site, professional dental lab. Since our technicians are on-site, you will not have to wait days or weeks for your new set of dentures or new partial. Normally, your new teeth will be ready the very next day and in some cases, the same day. We can then make any necessary adjustments, for a perfect fit, while you wait. Read our Denture FAQ.

Damaging Effects of Holiday Treats

As the holiday season approaches, there are a number of dangers lurking right on the dessert table! While all of these goodies taste so great, there are many ways they can cause damage to your teeth. Whether you're traveling to spend time with friends and family or hosting a holiday get together yourself, try to regulate your sugar intake this holiday. As the best dentist in southern Missouri, we know how important it is to care for your teeth, especially when you are more likely to indulge in those tasty treats. Take a look below to find some of the ways these sugary-filled goodies can cause damage to your pearly whites.

Bacteria Battle

When you eat sugary-filled foods (like a sampling from the entire desert table), the sugar mixes with the bacteria naturally found in your mouth. The sugars stick to your teeth and then the bacteria works with this sugar, forming a film over your teeth. It's important to wash this sugar off of your teeth, as soon as possible. Whether you do that by drinking plenty of water or brushing your teeth after you hit the dessert table, it's important to keep this bacteria battle from taking place on your tooth surface.

Wear Down of Enamel

When the sugar and bacteria mix on your tooth's surface, it starts to pull minerals out of your tooth's protective barrier - the enamel. This coating helps to protect your teeth and once the bacteria has penetrated, damage can start. Don't forget to think about your enamel as you get ready for your holiday feasts. Be sure to take proper care of your teeth and clean them in a timely manner after eating sugar-filled foods.

Cause Cavities

A cavity is when bacteria penetrates your tooth's surface and starts to eat away at your tooth. As your tooth enamel wears down, there is no protective layer between bacteria and your tooth. At this point, cavities may start to form. Remember to keep your teeth healthy and clean to help prevent cavities from forming after chowing down on holiday treats.

It's best to avoid holiday candies and treats that put sugar in your mouth. Sticky or hard candies are also harmful to your teeth. Keep your oral care in mind as you select your treats this holiday season.

Now that you've seen some of the damaging effects of sweet treats, you know how important it is to not over-do it at the dessert table at your upcoming holiday gatherings. After your holiday get together, it can be beneficial to schedule a check-up for your teeth. From our cleaning service to ensure your teeth are properly cleaned to our inspection of your mouth to make sure no new cavities have formed, you can catch and issues right away. Contact our Springfield, Missouri dental office to schedule your next appointment. Until then, our staff at Access Dental & Dentures wishes you a happy holiday season!

We want to be your dentist because your family deserves a great smile!

The Dangers of Over Whitening Your Teeth

Many people dream of having that picture perfect smile. Due to the pressure that’s put on one’s appearance in today’s society, teeth whitening is becoming more and more popular. While teeth whitening is not “bad for your teeth,” every dental procedure has the possibility for side effects. Your premier Springfield, MO dentist is here to share with you the risks of over whitening your teeth.

Tooth Discoloration

While some tooth issues are genetic, outside factors can cause tooth discoloration over time. Personal habits, such as smoking and drinking coffee, tea or wine, can cause staining of the teeth. Lack of oral hygiene can also contribute to discoloration. It’s just not normal for teeth to have a perfectly white appearance over time. Often times a professional cleaning can remove external stains, but in some cases whitening is needed for the desired results. Before attempting to whiten your teeth, you’ll want to discuss it with your dentist.

Side Effects of Teeth Whitening

The most common side effect of teeth whitening is increased tooth sensitivity. If you already have sensitive teeth, gum disease or teeth with worn enamel, teeth whitening products and procedures are discouraged. By whitening your teeth, you could worsen these conditions. Secondly, not all stains can be lightened by bleaching them, whether it be with an over-the-counter product or by a professional. In addition, if you’ve had bonding or tooth-colored fillings, whitening won’t fix your smile. The whitener does not affect the color of these materials, and therefore will not match the rest of your newly whitened smile.

Over Use of Whiteners

Like with anything from exercising to eating, excessiveness can be bad. Teeth are very delicate, and therefore, can’t take the repeated stripping that’s needed to whiten your teeth. Worn enamel leaves your teeth more susceptible to cracking or chipping. In some extreme cases, teeth can even become flexible and bend when pressure is applied. In addition, your teeth can become extremely sensitive, to the point that you have to avoid certain foods such as ice cream. You don’t want to use over-the-counter strips every day for several years and you don’t want to schedule a whitening procedure with your dentist every couple of months. If you choose to whiten your teeth, do so in moderation, and be sure to follow your dentist’s recommendations. They’ll be able to guide you to the most effective whitening treatment for your teeth and save you the risk of damaging your teeth.

Whether you whiten your teeth or not, it’s important to remember daily oral health habits. Along with brushing twice a day and flossing regularly, it’s important to schedule routine checkups and cleanings. At Access Dental & Dentures, assisting our patient’s ideal dental health is our passion. We provide personalized, quality dental services in a gentle and caring atmosphere. Call our office nearest you to make an appointment today.

We want to be your dentist because your family deserves a great smile!

6 Tips to Help Ease Your Child’s Fear of the Dentist

For children, and even some adults, going to the dentist can be quite scary. You have this person you’ve never met before, sticking things in your mouth and it’s not very comfortable. In today’s blog, Access Dental & Dentures offers some tips to help you ease your child’s fear of going to the dentist.

1. Start Dental Care Early.

The earlier your child starts visiting the dentist, the better! It’s best if the very first visit starts at the age of 1 or when the first tooth is visible. This helps to create a dental home, where all dental needs from preventative to emergency can be taken care of.

2. Don’t Overly Discuss the Visit.

As the parent, it’s important that you stay calm. If you show any worry that the child should be scared, they will. When preparing for a visit, don’t include too many details. This will raise more questions, which can lead to unnecessary anxiety. Keep a positive attitude, but don’t give the child false hope that it’s going to be fun.

3. Use Your Words Carefully.

When discussing a visit to the dentist, don’t use any words such as shot, hurt or pain. Leave the vocabulary to your dentist in Springfield, MO. He or she is trained to work with children and can help ease their nerves by creating a game out of it and making it fun. You can use positive phrases such as clean, strong and healthy teeth to make the visit seem like a good thing.

4. Avoid Using Bribery.

By asking your child not to fuss or cry, you’re insinuating that there’s something to worry about. Attempting to use bribery will only increase their apprehension. In addition, promising a sugary treat also sends the wrong message after the dentist emphasizes having clean, healthy teeth by avoiding sweets that cause cavities. Instead, praise your child after the visit for their good behavior. Occasionally, you can surprise him or her with a sticker or small toy for encouragement (but don’t promise it in the beginning).

5. Role Play and Read Books about the Dentist.

You can find a variety of children’s books about the dentist that have fun colorful pictures, putting your child’s mind at ease. These books outline what the dental visit will include and uses funny characters to demonstrate that it’s not so bad. In addition to reading, you can also role play. Sometimes acting out the situation can help alleviate fears. Set up a pretend dentist’s chair and pretend to be the dentist. Check their teeth, talk about x-rays and pretend to look in their mouth and count teeth. Talk to your child about how to brush his or her teeth. Let your child play the role of the dentist too, to make it more fun. Now your child will be a little better prepared for the real thing.

6. Stress the Importance of Dental Hygiene.

Without scaring your child and telling him or her that all their teeth will fall out, stress the importance of clean, healthy teeth. Teach your child that visiting the dentist is a necessity, not a choice. Tell your child the dentist will help ensure their teeth are strong enough for him or her to eat. You might also explain that the dentist makes sure patients have a beautiful smile for years to come. The dentist will reinforce the importance of dental hygiene as well.

At Access Dental, we love kids! We work hard to make your child’s first dental experience a positive one. Our goal is to establish good dental care habits, help all children feel good about visiting the dentist and to teach them how to care for their teeth. Give our Southern Missouri dentist office a call at 877-DENTIST to schedule an appointment for your child today!

FAQ About Our Denture Services

Dentures are a large part of our dental office, which leads to a lot of questions from our patients. Here at Access Dental & Dentures, we pride ourselves on offering custom dentures to help you achieve a natural smile. From a good fit to a confident smile, we want to ensure you are proud and comfortable with your dentures. Whether you are in need of dentures or know someone who is, you may be able to learn a little more about our denture services by checking out a list of frequently asked questions below.

What is a partial denture?

Partial dentures are removable dental appliances for patients who need to replace just a few missing teeth. (Full dentures replace all of your teeth, either upper, lower or both.) Arches are made consisting of replacement teeth and are attached with clasps to the remaining natural teeth for support and retention. Partial dentures can be used on the upper or lower arches.

Will people know I wear dentures?

Our dentures are custom-crafted by hand to ensure a natural, life-like appearance. The acrylic has fibers throughout so it looks like real gum tissue. Plus, we provide our patients the choice of teeth in different shapes and sizes with shading and blending that mimics natural tooth enamel. We also work hard to provide you with the best possible fit to avoid slipping, clicking and slurred speech. The only thing people will notice is your beautiful, natural looking smile.

How quickly will I adjust to dentures?

Your tongue, lips and cheeks will quickly and naturally adapt to the new shape of your mouth. Most people adjust to their new dentures in about a week.

How will dentures affect my speech?

The ability to speak clearly depends on subtle interactions involving your tongue, teeth, lips, cheeks and the roof of your mouth. A denture that's properly fitted allows all five components to work together naturally. With a new denture, you may initially notice some minor differences in speech. Most patients find they adapt and speech becomes natural very quickly. Ill-fitting dentures may slip which can cause clicking and whistling sounds and/or slightly slurred speech. Your dentist may be able to adjust the fit by relining or repairing the denture.

How will dentures affect my eating?

Properly fitted dentures enhance your chewing ability, helping your body properly digest food and obtain the nutrition it needs. You can enjoy the foods you love.

How will dentures affect my appearance?

A new, properly fitted denture will help you look better by providing the support your lips need, and by giving your face and smile a more natural appearance. Having good-looking teeth also gives you the confidence and freedom to smile and live life to the fullest. A tell-tale sign that it's time to replace your dentures- when you notice sagging facial muscles, excessive wrinkling and protruding lower jaw.

Should I remove my dentures at night?

Your dentist will provide instructions about how long dentures should be kept in place. If you are an immediate denture patient, you may be advised to wear them most of the time, including while you sleep to help promote healing. After the initial adjustment period, you may be instructed to remove the dentures before going to bed. This allows gum tissues to rest and promotes oral health. According to the American Dental Association, as a general rule, it is not a good idea for tissues to be constantly covered by denture material.

Do I need to visit a dentist regularly if I don't have any teeth?

We recommend annual visits to check the fit of your dentures and overall health of your mouth. Ill-fitting dentures can cause a variety of problems such as irritation and rubbing, speech and digestion problems. We also need to check for signs of oral cancer and other diseases, and examine your gum ridges, tongue and jaw joints.

Do I need any special care for my mouth if I wear full dentures?

Even with full dentures, you still need to take good care of your mouth. Every morning, brush your gums, tongue and palate with a standard soft-bristled toothbrush before you put in your dentures. This removes plaque and stimulates circulation in the mouth.

Is it natural to have sore spots on my gums?

No. Sore spots are an indication that your denture does not fit properly and is rubbing on your tissue. Your dentist needs to assess what is causing the irritation.

How long will dentures last?

With normal wear and care most dentures should last 5 to 7 years. The American Dental Association recommends replacement after that time due to the wearing down of the acrylic and tooth materials. Plus, the bone and tissue in your mouth change as you age, so your denture won't fit your mouth as well as it should. When a denture is not fitting properly, health problems often result.

If you are interested in a set of dentures or a partial service, contact our Springfield, MO dentist today. We offer professional and custom made dentures in southern Missouri. Give us a call at 877-DENTIST to schedule your denture consultation today! We look forward to helping you achieve a natural and healthy smile!

Foods to Limit at Your Holiday Gathering

The holidays are just around the corner, and along with it comes a variety of foods that should be limited if you want to keep your teeth clean, strong and healthy. While we want you to enjoy your holiday feast, we also want to warn you about some of the foods that can really affect your teeth. Keep reading to learn which foods your Southern Missouri dentist recommends avoiding, or at least limiting. In moderation, these foods will be fine, just don’t overindulge in them just because it’s the holiday season.

1. Sugary Foods.

The number one thing to watch out for during the holiday season is too much sugar. From the pies and the cakes to the fudge and candies, sugar is everywhere during the holidays. Candy canes are one of the worst things you can eat, as they are pure sugar and take a while to finish; during that time, the sugar is sitting there coating your teeth. Sugary drinks are something else to watch out for. While you don’t want to deprive yourself completely, it’s important to keep in mind how sugar can damage the enamel on your teeth. The sugar reacts with bacteria on the teeth, damaging the enamel by forming plaque. When you do eat sugary foods, be sure to brush your teeth as soon as possible afterward. The longer sugar stays on your teeth, the more time bacteria has to cause tooth decay.

2. Potatoes and Starchy Foods.

Potatoes, breads, crackers and other starchy foods easily get stuck between your teeth. These foods, crackers particularly, break down in your mouth, creating a mush that easily sticks to your teeth. Like sugar, starch also sticks to your teeth. Be sure to rinse your mouth well with water when eating these types of foods, as well as brush your teeth afterward. While it’s not bad to eat these sides occasionally, you should avoid eating too many helpings.

3. Acidic Drinks and Foods.

Punch is a very popular drink at holiday parties. Not only is it loaded with sugar, but it includes lemon juice and other acidic juices. Of all the acidic juices, lemon juice is the worst when it comes to caring for your teeth. Be sure to check the punch ingredients before downing cup after cup all night long. While it’s quite impossible to avoid acidic foods and drinks altogether, try to limit them. Citric acids can cause gum erosion. Consume grapefruit, lemon and other acidic drinks in moderation during the holiday season.

While you want to enjoy some holiday treats, just be sure not to over indulge. When you do eat sugary, acidic or salty treats, brush and floss afterward to prevent the sugars from sticking around. In addition, be sure to visit your dentist in Springfield, MO after the holiday season for your routine cleaning. Call Access Dental and Dentures at 877-DENTIST to schedule an appointment today!

Tips to Protect Your Teeth During Holiday Travels

As the hustle and bustle of the holiday seasons approaches, it's important to focus on your oral care routine and let it slip. We know it can be hard to stick with your regimen, especially if you are traveling this holiday season, but your teeth still need the attention they deserve. As your Springfield, MO dentist, we want to help five you some ideas of ways to protect your teeth, even when the holidays have you traveling out of town. Take a look below to learn some easy ways to stick with your oral care routine while traveling.

Invest in a Travel Oral Care Kit

To help remember all the oral care items you need, consider buying a travel size version of all your needed items. This can help ensure you have everything all in one place when you pack your bags. Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash should all be included in your travel bag. These items can help you stay on top of  your oral care routine and ensure your teeth and mouth are properly cleaned each morning and night.

Stick to a Routine

While traveling can throw off every routine you may have, it's important to stick with your oral care regimen. Remember to take a little time to focus on your oral care first thing in the morning and right before you head to bed at night. This can help to keep your teeth and entire mouth clean, as you travel.

Stay Hydrated

Whether your driving or flying to your destination, it can be easy to forget to drink enough water. Water helps to keep your entire body hydrated - mouth included. Drinking plenty of water can help keep your mouth rinsed out and healthy. It can also help to keep food particles and bacteria from building up in your mouth.

Chew Gum

Gum gets a bad reputation, but sugar-free gum can actually be good for your entire mouth. Aside from adding a fresh burst to your breath, gum can help to stimulate saliva production which helps to keep your mouth flushed out. Also chewing gum after a meal can help to remove any food particles that may build up in your mouth.

Common Foods that Can Damage Your Teeth

You are what you eat. While your doctor may tell you this, you normally wouldn’t expect to hear it from your dentist. While we may prefer not to believe it, it’s most certainly true. Especially when it comes down to the food particles that are left on your teeth once you are finished eating. At Access Dental and Dentures, your dental expert in Central Missouri, we believe our patients deserve to have the most information and newest technology available to make the right choices with their dental health. Here are some common foods that cause damage to your teeth and could increase visits to your dentist:

1. Acidic Foods

While avoiding acidic foods may seem like common sense, there are many foods that we eat daily that are high in acid. Here are a few foods that you should avoid eating or highly limit:

- Citrus foods – including but not limited to: lemons, limes, oranges, and cranberries.

- Pickles

- Tomatoes and tomato products (ketchup, tomato pasta sauces, salsa, etc.)

- Coffee
Eating high acidic foods daily erodes the tooth enamel which causes your teeth to decay faster. Acidic foods also irritate mouth sores. Avoiding high acidic foods helps the overall health of your mouth.

2. Sugar

I know, I know. Sugar is in so many food and drink items we consume daily and it’s delicious. Sugary foods and drinks can even become quite addictive. However, sugar causes plaque bacteria to attack the tooth’s enamel which weakens the enamel. These are some of the top sugary foods and beverages to avoid:

- Soda – while it’s easy to reach for your favorite soda when you need to get through that afternoon lull, water would be the preferred choice for the health of your teeth.

- Sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade, etc.) – these drinks are mainly made up of sugar. While they may seem like a healthy option, sugar is one of their main ingredients. They are great for athletes who need to replenish their electrolytes, but they should be consumed sparingly.

- Energy drinks and fruit juices – while both are highly acidic, both are also full of sugar. While energy drinks may give you energy, they may also give you plenty of dental problems including cavities.

- Candy – this includes both hard candies and soft candies. Hard candies are something to avoid, not only because of the sugar content but also because they can cause chipped or even broken teeth.

3. Sticky Foods

While you might think that dried fruit is a great healthy snack to reach for, your teeth and dentist think otherwise. Sticky foods stay on your teeth longer and get trapped into small areas in your gums and surrounding areas. Daily brushing and flossing might not be enough to save your teeth from the harmful effect of sticky foods.

Helpful hint: Sour gummy candy is the worst of the worst. While they are a type of sticky food, they are also packed full of sugar and are highly acidic. You might think that brushing your teeth right after eating sour gummy candy negates any of the harmful side effects. That, unfortunately, isn’t true and it has the reverse effect on your teeth. Brushing right after eating sour gummy candy causes more harm than good.

4. Alcohol and Wine

For some people, this could be the hardest to limit. Social drinking and happy hour are enjoyed by many. But drinking too much alcohol leads to dry mouth which decreases the production of saliva. While this may not seem like such a big issue, decreased amounts of saliva can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. You don’t have to completely cut out alcohol and wine, but it is best to limit your intake.

Knowing what foods to limit and avoid leads to overall better dental health. With knowledge and prevention with regular visits to your Lake of the Ozarks, Rolla, and Springfield dentist, you don’t have to completely give up the foods that can cause damage to your teeth. Contact the best dentist in southern Missouri if you’re ready to get your oral health on track.

We want to be your dentist because your family deserves a great smile!

All About Dentures

Deciding to get dentures can be a complicated process, but Access Dental and Dentures is here to provide tips for achieving the perfect dentures for the perfect smile. Getting dentures can be intimidating, but there are ways to finance and select the dentures that will work best for you.

What are dentures?

A denture is a set of replacement teeth for missing teeth and attaches to the surrounding teeth and gum tissue. Complete dentures and partial dentures are the only kinds of dentures made. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing from the top or bottom, while partial dentures are used if you still have some natural teeth.

How do dentures work and what are they made of?

With complete dentures, a pink flesh-colored acrylic fits over your gums and holds fake teeth made of porcelain in place to look natural. Adhesive glue is used to stick and hold the cap in place so that you can eat and drink without your dentures moving around in your mouth. We recommend using an adhesive glue that is zinc free, protects against gum irritation, and comes in a mint flavor for fresh breath.

A removable partial denture, often called a bridge, consists of replacement teeth which are connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in your mouth. Partial dentures are used when natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw.

What is the shape of dentures and why?

The upper denture covers the roof of your mouth while the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for your tongue to move. Dentures are supposed to look as natural as possible and blend in with the rest of your teeth. Dentures are custom-made in a dental laboratory from molded impressions taken of your mouth.

How easy is it to eat or drink with dentures?

Eating and drinking will be difficult at first, but shortly after you get your dentures they will begin to feel natural. Start out by eating soft foods and chew on both sides of your mouth.

How do I care for my dentures?

Sanitizing your false denture teeth is imperative and brushing, soaking, and flossed regularly will help make them last longer. Dentures need to be kept moist when not being worn so they do not dry out or lose their shape. To sanitize them, place your dentures in a denture cleanser soaking solution such as a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide along with some water.

How much does it cost to get dentures?

A complete set of dentures can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. Most dental insurance plans will help you cover the cost.

How long does it take for the dentures to be made?

Normally the process to make your dentures in Springfield, MO takes about 2-3 weeks. After the teeth are extracted and a mold is taken, a temporary denture will be made. This temporary denture will last until the dental lab is finished with your permanent dentures and once they come in, you will be fitted for your permanent dentures.

What kind of dentist should I go to for dentures?

Your general dentists may refer you to a prosthodontist if you need tooth replacement implants, dentures, crowns, or bridges. Prosthodontists are trained to design, construct, and fit replacement teeth.

We at Access Dental and Dentures hope that these tips for dentures will help you with your denture process. For good denture care, make sure to remove and rinse dentures after eating, brush your dentures at least once a day, and soak them overnight. If you need dentures in the mid-Missouri area, visit one of our locations to get your denture process started! We can’t wait to help your smile look great!

Frightening Effects of Halloween Candy on Your Children’s Teeth

The spookiest night of the year is just around the corner, and the ample amount of candy can be your biggest nightmare as a parent. Is Halloween candy and its effects on your children’s teeth enough to give you the chills? Cavities and tooth decay are unnerving enough, but kids on Halloween eat around 4 times the amount of candy eaten by adults. Access Dental & Dentures recommend not eating candy that is too sticky or chewy because it can impact the sealants on children’s teeth which prevent cavities.

1. Not all sugary candies are created equal.

Cavities and tooth decay are caused by prolonged exposure to sugar in the mouth. Not surprisingly, sugar is the leading cause of cavities and tooth decay and the bacteria found in the mouth feeds on the sugar in candy when it turns into acid. This acid attacks tooth enamel causing it to decay.

Some candies are much more erosive than others because of the amount of sugar in them. The main problem with artificial sugar is that our bodies do not know what do to with it. Our bodies are just not equipped to handle artificial foods or sugars. Look for sugar free candy, hard candy, and dark chocolate. Sugar free gum can actually prevent cavities and tooth decay and can increase saliva which works to neutralize the acids in the mouth. Dark chocolate is the healthiest chocolate because its antioxidants are good for your heart and may even lower blood pressure.

Try to avoid sticky, sour, and high sugar content candy. Sugary snacks like candy corn, cookies, and cake can all cause tooth decay from the excessive amounts of sugar they contain, which can lead to increased cavities in your mouth. Sour candies are highly acidic and can break down tooth enamel fast, which will never grow back. But the good news is that saliva slowly helps to restore the natural balance of the acid in the mouth. Our tip: wait 30 minutes to brush your teeth after you eat sweets to allow the acid to harden in your mouth for easy removal once you brush.

2. Candy can weaken bones and teeth.

Eating a whole bowl of candy can have an acidic effect in the blood. Our blood has a healthy pH level and will adjust to stay in that healthy range. If sugar lowers that level too much, making it acidic, it must come back up. To compensate, the blood needs minerals to balance our pH and bring it back to that healthy range. Our cells pull calcium from our bones and teeth in order to protect the blood. Not surprisingly, this leads to weakening in our bones and decay in our teeth.

3. Eat well beforehand.

Candy is a treat, not a source of nutrition. Eating a healthy dinner prior to trick-or-treating will help prevent mindless candy consumption.

4. Keep up good oral hygiene habits.

Halloween isn’t a welcome party for cavities. Stay mindful of you and your child’s candy intake and be sure to follow up with a good brush and floss session. This will help fight tooth decay and will wash away the bacteria that cause bad breath and bleeding gums. Stay committed to your daily oral hygiene habits and make sure you and your child are properly brushing, flossing, and making routine checkups to the dentist.

While we think of mostly kids trick-or-treating, we know that adults will be too. Don’t let the sugar monster stick around, visit the best dentist in Springfield, Osage Beach, and Rolla, Missouri for a cleaning and checkup after your night of frights. From everyone at the Access Dental & Dentures office, we want to wish you a safe and happy Halloween!

BACK TO BASICS: Oral Care Tips for a Healthy Smile

It can be easy to get distracted from proper oral care, especially with all the new tools and features available on the market. From water picks to tongue scrapers, there are many items that can pull your attention away from the basics of oral care. As the best dentist near Springfield, MO, we pride ourselves on keeping our patients informed and up-to-date on proper oral care. Take a look below to learn more about these oral care tips for a happy, healthy smile!

Brush, Brush, Brush

Brushing your teeth is vital to your oral care and overall health. Not brushing can lead to gum disease and cavities in your teeth. It's recommended to brush your teeth twice each day. Try to make this part of your morning and night-time routine that way you don't skip it. Start the day with a clean and fresh mouth and end the day the same way! It's a great way to get into a good habit of brushing twice each day!

Floss Between Teeth

While brushing your tooth surface cleans a big portion of your teeth, you still miss about 40% of your tooth's surface if you skip flossing. Between your teeth lingers food particles and other bacteria that builds up throughout the day. Flossing once a day can help keep your teeth clear of harmful bacteria that may cause damage to your tooth surface.

Drink Plenty of Water

Not only is water good for your entire body, it's important for proper oral care too. Keeping your gums and mouth hydrated is good for circulation and helps to keep all body functions working properly. Water also helps to wash food particles from your mouth after a meal. This can help to keep food from building up on your tooth surface, which attracts bacteria and can cause damage.

Eat a Healthy Diet

A well-balanced diet helps to keep your teeth and mouth in a healthy condition. Sugary filled foods can build up on your teeth and cause damage, when mixed with the bacteria naturally found in your mouth. Try to regulate your food intake and keep a happy balance between sweet treats and healthy foods.

Tooth Fairy Ideas the Won't Break the Bank

The average "going rate" for the tooth fairy is $3.70 per tooth! If you attempt to keep up with your child's friend's tooth fairy, you may be hurting in the financial department. Instead of dishing out cash for every tooth that falls out, there are other creative - and less expensive- ways to handle the situation. Being the tooth fairy is a tough job, especially when you aren't sure how much - or what- to leave under the pillow. As your trusted dentist near Springfield, MO, we are here to help with some clever ideas for tooth fairy gifts in exchange for a tooth falling out.

Add to a Favorite Collection

What does your child love to collect? Consider having the tooth fairy leave an item to add to his or her collection for a thoughtful and custom gift. Whether its marbles or rocks or beads, there are a number of inexpensive ways to help add to your child's collection, instead of leaving cash.

Various Coins

While collector coins can be very pricey, consider giving "smashed pennies" from various locations you have visited. It's a cheaper option for the tooth fairy. As an added bonus, in the morning you and your child can reminisce about what fun you had at the "penny" location. It's a unique way to give your kid a thrill and encourage strong communication.

Stickers

Who doesn't love stickers? Whether it's a favorite cartoon or animal or a simple smiley face - stickers are a fun way to reward a kid for losing a tooth. If you find a good deal on stickers, you can even leave an entire package in exchange for the tooth, without breaking the bank!

Educational Gift

While some of these types of gifts can get pricey, consider finding books or other games at a garage sale or thrift store to have the tooth fairy leave for your child. It's an inexpensive way to give the gift of fun and education - the best of both worlds!

Now that you've seen a few unique tooth fairy ideas, you're ready to start implementing them in your house. Whether you choose a different object altogether or decide to cut back on the amount left for your child, you can start saving right away. As your child's teeth start to fall out and the makeup of their mouth starts to change, it's an important time to keep up with regular dental visits. It's recommended that a child (and adult) have a dental appointment every six months. This helps to regulate any changes and catch any issues that may arise. Contact Access Dental & Dentures at 877-DENTIST to schedule an appointment today!

Celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month

October is National Dental Hygiene Month! It's a great time to focus on proper oral care techniques and improving your oral health. As we celebrate the professionals who help teach the right way to care for our mouths, we've dedicated this week's blog to oral care, as well. Here at Access Dental And Dentures, we pride ourselves on providing helpful dental hygiene techniques for our patients. Take a look below to see what we commend for your oral care routine!

Brush Twice a Day

Each and every day your teeth need brushed twice. To help get into a good routine, it's recommended to do this first thing in the morning and right before bed in the evening. It can help rid your teeth of germs and plaque that builds up throughout the day and night. Remember to spend two minutes brushing each time you brush to adequately clean your tooth surface!

Floss Between Teeth

It's recommended to floss between your teeth once a day. This can help remove any plaque or food particles that may be hiding between your teeth. Brushing doesn't reach your entire tooth surface and flossing can help reach where a toothbrush does not. Flossing is also good for your gums and helps to avoid dangerous infections.

Rinse Your Mouth

While brushing and flossing are vital to your oral care routine, there is much more of the mouth the does not get cleaned. That's where mouthwash comes in handy! As you rinse your mouth, every surface is cleansed, leaving your mouth feeling clean and fresh.

Chew Gum

Chewing gum after a meal can actually help prevent tooth decay. With food particles building up in your mouth, the gum can help clean your tooth surface off. This helps to prevent food from sittin on your teeth for long periods of time and causing decay. If you do chew gum, make sure it's sugar free to avoid adding sugar into your mouth and preventing a sticky situation.

Now that you've read about our oral care tips, you're ready to tackle Dental Hygiene Month! Simply add these teqchniques into your daily routine. You only get one set of permanent teeth - it's important to take good care of them! In addition to the daily oral care tips, it's important to have a dental check up every six months. Contact the best dentist near Springfield, MO to schedule your appointment today! We look forward to helping you and your family achieve happy and healthy smiles!

Get Your Oral Care Back On Track This Fall

Have you been slacking in the oral care department? Not remembering to floss every day? Skipping a brushing? Letting your diet slip? Now's the time to get back on track! With the change of the season, you can set new goals for your oral care routine. With fall upon us, you may have a little more time to hone in on taking care of your teeth. The best dentist in Springfield, MO is here to point out some oral care tips you can strive for, with your new and improved routine! Take a look below.

Brush Twice Each Day

It's important to set the base for your oral care routine by brushing twice each day. To help you stay on track, try to brush first thing in the morning when you wake up and right before bed at night. It's a great way to start and end each day. Remember to brush for at least two minutes each time you brush.

Floss Between Teeth

At least once every day be sure to floss between your teeth. Thread a piece of floss back and forth in between each tooth. This can help you clean out food particles and bacteria that tends to hide in these hard to reach spaces. If you skip flossing during your oral care practice, you are missing 40% of your tooth's surface!

Increase Water Intake

Staying hydrated is good for your entire body - mouth included. Water helps to wash down extra food particles that get left in the mouth after eating. It can also help ride your mouth of extra bacteria that may build up on your tooth, gum, and tongue surface. It's best for you and your oral care to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

Watch What You Consume

Your diet has a direct impact on your oral health. Try to consume foods that are healthy and avoid sugary filled food items. While a treat every now and then is fine, it's all about balance. Sugar can mix with the bacteria found in your mouth and lead to faster tooth decay. If you do consume sugary foods, try to drink plenty of water to help wash it out of your mouth.

Visit the Dentist

It's important to visit a dental professional at least once every six months. This routine check up can help to monitor your oral health and ensure no major changes are taking place. If you don't have your next appointment scheduled, contact our dental office today!

Now that you known what oral care items you should be doing on a daily basis, you're ready to improve your routine. If you have any questions about your oral care routine or concerns about the health of your mouth, contact our southern Missouri dentist office today. Give Access Dental And Dentures a call at 877-DENTIST to reach any of our four locations. We look forward to helping you and your family achieve a happy, healthy smile this fall!
